The Majestic Eucalyptus Canopy
As you drive down Maluhia Road, a mile-long stretch of towering Eucalyptus Robusta forms a lush canopy overhead, creating the renowned Kaua’i Tree Tunnel.

Planted over a century ago, these eucalyptus trees stand as sentinels to the island’s past, whispering tales of the early sugar plantation days. This was when the co-founder of the McBryde Sugar Company, Walter Duncan McBryde, also known as the Pineapple Baron, first envisioned this grand entrance to his estate.
Walter Duncan McBryde was known for his pioneering spirit and lasting impact on the island’s agricultural community, McBryde’s legacy is intertwined with the very essence of Kaua’i.
Today, as visitors drive through the Tunnel of Trees or walk the grounds of the Kukuiolono Park, they are walking in the footsteps of Walter McBryde. His vision helped shape the landscape and contributed to the beautiful island of Kauai as we know it today.

It’s not uncommon to see people pulled over to the side of the road taking photos or videos of the tree tunnel to post to their social media accounts.
Conservation for Future Generations
The historical importance of the Tunnel of Trees Kaua’i is not lost on the locals. Efforts are underway to preserve this natural wonder for future generations. It stands as a grand gateway to the Garden Isle’s commitment to sustainability and respect for the land. It’s important to note that for Kauai’s residents, sustainability is more than a practice; it’s a way of life.

In the spirit of ‘Malama Aina’ (caring for the land), the residents of Kauai engage in community-led beach cleanups, reforestation projects, and educational programs aimed at promoting environmental stewardship.
The Mauka Reservoir and Waihohonu Stream
The Mauka Reservoir and Waihohonu Stream are in close proximity to the Tunnel of Trees. The Mauka Reservoir plays a key role in Kauai’s efforts to save water. It’s essential for giving water to the island’s farms and helps protect against floods.
Not far from the reservoir, the Waihohonu Stream flows gently through the land. This stream gets its water from the reservoir and also from springs in the mountains. It’s an important place for plants and animals unique to the island, which depend on its pure and steady stream for their lives.
Both the reservoir and the stream are really important for keeping the island healthy. They help people as well as the local animals and plants. The people of Kauai take care of these water sources very well.
They make sure that the sensitive environments around the water stay healthy. This shows how much the people living there honor and protect the land and its natural treasures.

After driving through the tunnel of trees you will find Koloa Town.

Nestled on the south side of Kaua’i, Koloa Town is a treasure trove of history. Here you will find a few different shops, restaurants, excursion companies, and some of the best food trucks in Poipu.
Some of the most notable in Koloa Town include the following businesses which we recommend you visit;
- Kenji Burger
- Poipu365
- Sueoka Store
- The Tasting Room
- La Spezia

You could take a detour onto the Koloa Heritage Trail and discover ancient places of worship where every corner has a story to tell. As you explore, the echoes of Hurricane Iniki can still be felt, a testament to Mother Nature’s powerful winds and the resilience of the island’s community.
Beyond the Tunnel: Kauai’s South Shore Delights
Emerging from the tunnel’s natural gateway, you’ll find yourself on the South side of Kaua’i, home to Poipu Beach, championship golf courses, and the historic Kauai Pineapple Company. The Holo Holo Koloa Scenic Byway leads you to stunning views, the Spouting Horn, and the serene Kukiolono Park.

Thanks for the video of the tunnel! My dream is to drive through the tunnel one day, see the welcome to Poipu sign with the dolphin and never drive back out.
