We love first-time visitors to Poipu. There’s something special about watching someone discover our corner of Kauai for the first time—that moment when they step out onto their lanai, see the ocean stretching endlessly before them, and realize their phone screen didn’t do it justice.
But after 30 years of welcoming guests to our 31 properties in Poipu, we’ve noticed the same mistakes popping up again and again. Not major disasters, mind you—just small oversights that can turn a perfect vacation into a slightly-less-perfect one.
So consider this your friendly heads-up from your Poipu neighbors. These are the things we wish every first-timer knew before their bags hit the lanai.
Mistake #1: Waiting Too Long to Book Your Rental Car
This is the big one, and we see it constantly.
You’ve booked your flight, reserved your accommodations, and figured you’ll “get to the car rental later.” Then two months before your trip, you check prices and discover that economy cars are either sold out or going for $150+ per day.
Here’s the reality: Kauai is not Oahu. We don’t have robust public transportation, and rideshares are sparse in Poipu. You need a car. There’s no getting around it (pun intended).
Book your rental car the same week you book your flight. Seriously. Treat them as a package deal in your mind. If you wait until a month before your trip, you’ll pay double—or worse, you’ll be scrambling to find anything with four wheels.
And while we’re on the subject: you don’t need a Jeep or 4WD vehicle unless you’re planning to drive all the way to Polihale Beach (which, fair warning, will void most rental agreements anyway). A standard car handles everything you’ll need in Poipu and the South Shore.

Mistake #2: Packing Like You’re Moving to Kauai
We get it. You’re excited. You want to be prepared for every possible scenario.
But here’s what we’ve learned from three decades of welcoming guests: everyone overpacks, and everyone regrets it when they’re wrestling oversized suitcases up condo stairs.
The beauty of staying in a vacation rental instead of a hotel? We have washers and dryers. You can do laundry. Revolutionary concept, we know.
Here’s what you actually need:
- Reef-safe sunscreen (TSA-compliant size, then buy more locally)
- 3-4 days of casual clothes (you’ll be in swimsuits most of the time anyway)
- One “nice casual” outfit for dinner
- Flip-flops and walking shoes
Here’s what you don’t need to pack:
- Beach towels (we provide them)
- Hair dryer (every property has one)
- Snorkel gear (more on this in a second)
- Your own personal Keurig (every property has a coffee machine)
- Twelve different outfit options
- Bulky beach chairs and umbrellas
We’ve seen guests show up with enough luggage to furnish an apartment. Three suitcases for a week-long trip. Eight pairs of shoes for a beach vacation. A full-size beach umbrella that clearly hasn’t left their garage since 2007. One gentleman brought his own blender “just in case.” Sir, we have blenders. We have everything for home cooked meals.

If your property doesn’t include beach chairs, umbrellas, or snorkel gear—and some of ours don’t—it’s a five-minute drive to Snorkel Bob’s or Boss Frog’s.
Both are reliable, affordable, and located right here in Poipu. You can rent quality gear for your entire stay for less than the airline would charge you to check an extra bag.

Mistake #3: Booking Through OTA’s Instead of Direct
Look, we understand the appeal of browsing everything in one place. But here’s what those platforms don’t advertise in big letters on their homepage: the well known travel booking companies are charging you a lot of extra money that you don’t even know about.
Service fees, booking fees, and processing fees add up fast, sometimes to hundreds of dollars on top of your nightly rate.
When you book directly with Poipu365, you get better rates and you avoid all those extra fees. That’s more money in your pocket for a sunset dinner at The Beach House or a helicopter tour over the Napali Coast.
But here’s the best part: when you book direct with us and return for another stay, we’ll take 10% off your entire next booking—as long as you pay your deposit within 30 days of checkout from your first stay. That’s our way of saying mahalo for coming back to our little piece of paradise.
Those OTA platforms? They’re not giving you 10% off your next vacation.

Mistake #4: Not Reading Our Month-by-Month Guide (Or Any of Our Blogs, Really)
We publish these blogs for a reason, and it’s not just to fill the internet with more content.
Every blog post we write comes from real experience—ours and our guests’—about what actually works in Poipu. We’ve covered everything from the best time to visit Kauai month by month to what to do when it rains, where to find the best snorkeling spots, and even the hidden gems of Shipwrecks Beach.
Our month-by-month guide alone will tell you when to expect whale season, when the surf’s best for beginners, when to pack a light jacket, and when to book your trip if you want to avoid crowds.
Reading through our content before you arrive isn’t homework—it’s the difference between spending your first two days figuring things out and hitting the ground running from the moment you land.
We’ve spent 30 years learning this island. We’re sharing that knowledge freely.

Mistake #5: Choosing the North Shore Because Everyone Talks About It
The North Shore of Kauai gets all the press. Hanalei Bay looks incredible on Instagram. The Napali Coast is breathtaking. We’re not going to argue with any of that.
But here’s what nobody mentions in those glossy travel articles: the North Shore gets twice the rain that Poipu gets, the ocean swells make swimming dangerous in winter, and you’ll spend hours in the car getting to the rest of the island.
There’s a reason why Poipu wins every time for smart travelers. Our South Shore microclimate means sunshine when the North Shore is under clouds. Our beaches have calm waters perfect for families and beginning snorkelers. And our central location means you’re within an hour of nearly everything worth seeing on Kauai—including the North Shore itself.
You want to visit Hanalei or hike the Kalalau Trail? Great! Do it as a day trip from your sunny Poipu home base, then come back to calm seas and dry skies.
